Norway: 2 Day Hike To Trolltunga
Today is a lovely Sunday here in Jurmala, a suitable day to get comfortable in hammock at my parents garden and put a story together about my second weekend escape to Norway.
Returned a few weeks ago and still can’t get over it. I knew that nature in Norway is amazing but I couldn’t imagine that it’s so amazing. It’s a struggle to pick pictures for this post as plenty of views are outstanding. It seems that if one lives in Norway and has a bad view out of the window, the person must do something wrong with his/her life.
Beginning of the 22 km trail (both ways) is hiding next to these houses, by the foot of Skjeggedal mountain.
It starts with steep about 2 km long climb. If you can conquer this part then the rest should be doable too.
Wondering which direction the way will take us.
Plenty of waterfalls which spoil the thirsty hikers with unbelievably pure and tasty water.
Elevation has done it’s job, from rich woods to empty meadows. Height about 1000m.
Saying thanks to the rocky guides who showed us the way.
The meadow down the alley is where I stayed in a tent for the first time. Waking up at 5am and washing face in cold mountain water while listening to silence and enjoying complete peace around was magical.
2 day hike up and down the tricky mountain trails. Snow, strong wind, rain, mud, +15 to +1C. But hey.. great things happen out of the comfort zone.
Even though the trail ain’t easy there are loads of curious explorers to say ‘Hi’ to on the way.
Here it is, the Troll’s tongue as Norweigians call it. Place welcomes thousands of travellers so it took some time for me to get on the stage for a must-have photo. Once I got on.. what a huge tongue it actually is! Standing on the viewpoint nearly 1200 meters above the ground shook and twirled my insides. I layed down on a belly and leaned over the edge to see what’s hiding down there. I discovered absolutely magnificent views.
Happy, thank you, more please,
– Ruta
Nice one, but I’d not stand and pose at the tip of the tongue because I’m afraid of heights ;p

This is such a beautiful place. Beautiful views. You look very victorious standing on the tongue. It must have been at least a bit scary, being so close to the edge. Was it windy there? It looks cold there but good to see that you are all rugged up.
The 1000m bridge looks rickety. I hope it didn’t sway too much when you crossed it – if it did 🙂

Hi Mabel – it’s always nice to see you back in my blog.
I didn’t have time to worry about the heights as my mind was busy on processing the-amazing-views thoughts. If I think about it now, yes, it was quite windy and easy to place feet somewhere not safe as it was rainy and the rocks were slippery.
The bridge swayed a little and it was musical too as it creaked 🙂
See you around,

Wow, the views are STUNNING. I would think washing your face in water that cold might give you a headache. The change in scenery from start to finish is incredible.

Hi Wayne – thanks for pointing out the surroundings change. It was interesting to see what 750m elevation (trail starts at 450m and reaches 1200m) can do with fauna. However, once I think about temperature drop from 15C to 1C along the way, it doesn’t seem so surprising anymore 🙂
Hahaa, as I enjoy and am used to taking cold showers this was a headache-free day, no worries.

Hi Liz 🙂 You know what.. I usually don’t think about returning to the travel destinations I have been to as there are so many other places I wish to explore, but this trail is an exception.

Norway looks amazing! There’s no doubt about that. It’s been on our list for ages. I’ve got a serious problem with heights. I’m not sure I would be able to make it to the tip of the Troll’s tongue. Stunning visuals! Glad to have found your blog. 🙂

Hi,
Don’t worry, even if you don’t step on the Troll’s tongue, the hike will be outstanding. Much appreciated.
